How to play

01

Install The Culling through Steam. Use the regular release, not the Day 1 Reference.

02

Download the Func launcher.

03

Unzip it anywhere you want and run Func.Launcher.exe.

04

When the game reaches the main menu, check that the version under the logo ends in "-FUNC-2".

05

Verify that you can join a solo queue (Play -> Solo). You should see at least one player in the queue (you).

06

Turn off Team Chat and Proximity Chat in audio settings to avoid hearing everyone twice.

Func is still in beta and may crash unexpectedly or have other issues.

What Func is

Func is a non-commercial project to revive The Culling's servers. It has three pieces: a launcher for players, a central matchmaking and entitlement server, and a custom game server.

The goal is feature parity first. Balance changes, mods, and new features can wait until the original experience is stable.

What the launcher does

  • Finds the Steam install folder and launches the game through Func.
  • Routes region URLs to Func's custom server.
  • Patches the old OpenSSL SHA extension issue that breaks launch on newer CPUs.
  • Adds detailed crash logging for debugging private beta issues.
  • Removes irrelevant menu elements such as store banners without modifying game files.

Known bugs

  • Unlocking airdrops for later use does not work yet. Manual airdrop unlocks are possible.
  • The Func counter sometimes resets to 0.
  • Voice chat currently treats everyone too broadly; disable team and proximity voice chat.
  • After dying, heartbeat and status-effect sounds can keep playing.
  • Rarely, a door may look closed when it is actually open. Interacting with it usually resyncs it.
  • In-game camera objects are stuttery.

Vanilla bugs

  • Total Func needed for an airdrop is wrong before match start. This was also a bug in the original game.

Not yet implemented

Leveling up, the ranking system, and earning crates are not implemented yet.

Possible quality-of-life work

  • Better spectator mode that does not take up game slots
  • A spectator HUD toggle for casters and streamers
  • Free cam for spectators
  • Multiple loadout presets

Troubleshooting

FAQ

What if it does not work?

Make sure Steam is running, not as administrator, and that The Culling is installed through Steam.

What if I am not using Steam?

Func can work with some Steam emulators, but you need to place the launcher files in [Culling Folder]/Victory/Binaries/Win64/ and launch Func.Launcher.exe from there. Use your own SteamID. You still need to own the game.

What region should I choose?

It does not matter right now. All regions point to the same server in Germany.

What game version is supported?

The latest released Steam build, 119207. The Day 1 Reference build is not supported.

Can I download a server and host matches myself?

Not yet. This will probably happen down the line.

Will you open source the launcher?

Yes. It will be available on GitHub after the private beta.

Func-2
